PETER DOWLING - composer and performer - long biography...

Peter Dowling is a composer and performer. His work has been presented throughout the UK and in Europe including festivals in London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Berlin, Munich, Lisbon and most recently at NIME in Tokyo, ICMC in Miami, Upgrade! in Munich and YCM in Apeldoorn. Works have also been broadcast on German (Bayern) and British (BBC) radio. His music has been performed by, amongst others, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Paragon Ensemble, Hebrides Ensemble and Orkest de Ereprijs; receiving support from the likes of CALQ, Scottish Arts Council, Goethe Institut, Tolbooth, CCA, SMC and the BBC. He has collaborated extensively with choreographers, dancers, directors, actors and artists, most notably with 'Creative Scotland' award winner Colette Sadler at the 'National Review of Live Art', Frieder Weiss in Germany, and video artist Rob Kennedy at 'Glasgow International' visual arts festival.

Dowling has toured and performed around the UK and Europe, in the past as a saxophonist and now as a computer musician, and is an original and founder member of the 'Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra' (3 albums released on FMR Records to date). He was also a founder member and the visual arts curator of The KEN Exhibition – a one-off festival centred on the music of six Glasgow-based composers and numerous visual artists that took place in December 2004 to popular and critical acclaim.

It is these last two associations that characterise the creative direction in which he is currently heading, involving a move away from certain traditional models of composition and performance and a focus on writing for performers (people) rather than 'instruments' and finding ways to reconcile diverse elements (e.g. improvisation and score-based ways of working via the use of electronics) alongside a particular concern with the details of dissemination and mediation.

In 2004 Bayern2 radio station in Germany featured a documentary about Dowling, some of his contemporaries and the composition and improvisation scene in Glasgow, UK. During summer 2005 he was a guest of the Kulturreferat der Landeshauptstadt München on a three-month stipendium at the 'Villa Waldberta' in Munich. In 2006 he was a finalist at the Apeldoorn 'Young Composers Meeting' in The Netherlands, hosted by Orkest de Ereprijs and the Gaudeamus Foundation. In June 2006 the seventhings label released his solo work Don't Touch Me! (I Hate You Sometimes) . He is currently working on an ongoing collaborative project with visual artist Karena Nomi, produced by the SNYK in Denmark and presented there in August 2006 and in Glasgow in December 2006. The summer of 2007 sees Dowling in Berlin for one month on a Goethe scholarship, and MontrĂ©al for two months on a PRIM residency hosted by CALQ. From September 2006 – December 2007 he was 'AHRC Research Fellow in the Creative and Performing Arts' at the University of Glasgow.
